@misc { , title = {In the time of art with policy: the practice of Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison alongside global environmental policy since the 1970s.}, abstract = {From around 1970, the artists Helen Mayer Harrison (1927-2018) and Newton Harrison (b. 1932), known as ‘the Harrisons,’ started to focus on ecology and ecological systems, influenced by amongst other things, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring which had been published in 1962. ‘Earth Day’ was established in 1970. Limits to Growth was published in 1972 (Meadows et al.). International environmental policy took a step change with the first of the global environmental conferences, the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm (1972), as well as the adoption of the first of the modern global treaties on the environment – the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention, 1971) and the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972). What might a juxtaposition of the trajectory described by the work of the Harrisons with the expansion of global developments such as these since the 1970s reveal about the potential cross currents between art in the public realm and public policy?}, doi = {10.4324/9780429450471-27}, isbn = {9780429450471}, note = {INFO COMPLETE (Now published, checked and updated 27/10/2020 LM -- Info via contact of acceptance 17/10/2019 LM) PERMISSION GRANTED (permission rec'd 7/9/2020 LM -- version = AAM; embargo = 18 months; licence = BY-NC; POLICY = https://www.routledge.com/info/open\_access/by\_the\_chapter ) DOCUMENT READY (file rec'd from contact 21/10/2019 LM) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (Pub set statement - This is an Accepted Manuscript of a book chapter published by Routledge/CRC Press in [BOOK TITLE] on [date of publication], available online: http://www.routledge.com/[BOOK ISBN URL] or http://www.crcpress.com/[BOOK ISBN URL) [ISBNs removed for submission to REF 9781138325302; 9780429833816 -- restored 01.04.2021 GB]}, pages = {300-314}, publicationstatus = {Published}, publisher = {Taylor \& Francis (Routledge)}, url = {https://rgu-repository.worktribe.com/output/673907}, keyword = {Environment, Energy & Sustainability, Inclusive & Creative Societies, The Harrisons, Ecology, Environmental policy, Global treaties, Environment, Public policy, Art}, year = {2020}, author = {Fremantle, Chris and Douglas, Anne and Pritchard, Dave} }
