Abstract

The Slapstick Mystics with Sticks was one of ten international artist commissions for Frieze Projects at the Frieze Art Fair, 15-18 October 2004, in London. The Slapstick Mystics with Sticks performance occurred unannounced at the entrance to the fair. The performance referenced the traditional mumming play - combining the slapstick and absurd word play associated with such plays with a composite of art historical and philosophical texts. As such, the authority and meaning of this language was disrupted and re-configured. The event of the performance heightened the plays own internal dynamics to create a staged confrontation within the fair. This performance is one component within an ongoing project that uses the narrative possibilities of the title as a device to enable a continuous re-interpretation and re-configuration of the work. For example, The Slapstick Mystics with Sticks is also a novella, within which the play occurs within another narrative.
