Project Description

Universities have been providing blended teaching since March 2020. Though this mode allows students to continue to engage in education, it has certainly created mental health problems among students. It is important to bring students back to campus and provide normal conditions as safely as possible.
Though vaccination has allowed some hope of a return to normality, it is not yet clear how long immunity will last. Thus, we will need to establish mitigation strategies even when vaccinations are complete and students return to universities in large numbers

The project will develop a spatio-temporal aerosol dispersion model in a large enclosed space considering peoples’ movements in order to establish virus accumulation hotspots and develop mitigation strategy.

We will establish
• how a virus laden aerosols form, disperse and decay when ejected from a symptomatic (coughing) and an asymptomatic (talking) under various ambient conditions
• how a group moves through a large enclosed space at different times by tracking
• how a number of people are located within a space with a certain proportion of infected person (asymptomatic) allowing to simulate aerosol cloud dispersion.

The project is in partnership with Dr Snehashish Banik, Consultant Physician, NHS Grampian & University of Aberdeen. The project was funded as part of an internal, competitive process.
