Abstract

This website was developed as the result of a commission by Aberdeen Art Gallery in 2017, in which the artist was tasked with creating a library of ceramic glaze test tiles. The spectrum was developed with the aim of being as bright as possible, using eight common metal oxides and no commercial stains. 1,500 glaze tests were undertaken over the course of the project, from which 500 were selected for the final collection. Two versions of the glaze library are available to view in person: one in the Aberdeen Art Gallery and the other in the ceramics workshop of Gray's School of Art at RGU. After the phyiscal library had been finished, the artist then collaborated with Design and Code to transform the data that had been collected through the glaze tests into an online learning resource - the Glaze Spectrum website. The website finally went live in 2020, with the aim of drawing people into the world of glazing, and encouraging them to undertake their own experiments and to learn more about the chemistry involved.

Additional Information Photography of the collection for use on the website was undertaken by Fergus Connor and Naomi Christie. The original website was coded and stylistically designed by the company Design and Code. The file preserved on this repository represents an "offline" version of the site that, once downloaded, can be used without access to the Internet. This "offline" version has been coded by a member of staff in RGU's Publications Team rather than replicating Design and Code's coding for the original, and, while every effort has been made to achieve stylistic similarity with the original site, some differences remain for technical reasons. To use the "offline" version, download and unzip/uncompress the ZIP archive, then open the "glazespectrum.html" file contained within.
