Abstract
Russian polytechnic education is going through a sequence of transformations that started with the introduction of bachelor and master degrees into higher education instead of the previous "specialists". The next stage of reformation in Russian polytechnic education should reflect the growth in quality of teaching and learning experience that it is possible to achieve by accumulating the best educational practices of other world-class universities, using the benchmarking method. This paper gives an overview of some major distinctive features of foreign benchmarks for higher education institutions and the profile of Russian polytechnic universities. The parameters selected for comparison include the scope of educational profile, industrial specialization, connections with leading regional corporations, size of the institution's city and the number of students. When considering the possibilities of learning from relevant global higher education practices, the authors emphasize the importance of: helping engineers to form new mentalities; the role of computer technologies in engineering education; the fact that levels of access to licensed software for educational processes elsewhere currently exceeds the level of access available at a regional Russian university; and successful staff employment practices (e.g. inviting "guest" lecturers, or having two or three lecturers per course).
