Abstract

Nowadays it is common to hear and talk about gender, gender violence, ideology of gender, gender perspective, among others, however, it is sometimes not clear what we mean when we talk about "gender". Originally the concept comes from psychology and medicine, and emerged in the mid-60s, following the work of psychologist John Money and psychiatrist Robert Stoller, whose book "Sex and Gender" examined real cases where genetic sex is not corresponded to the assigned identity. He concluded that what determines identity and gender behavior is not biological sex but the experience of the assigned sex which led him to distinguish between both categories, limiting "sex" to the biological and "gender" to the psychological or cultural. Thus, the appropriate terms to refer to the sex are male and female while for gender they are female and male.
