Abstract

In this webinar, Paul Arnell and Carole Lyons (both affiliated with Robert Gordon University) discsuss the war in Ukraine from the Council of Europe perspective, focusing particularly on the human rights dimension. This webinar will focus on the Council of Europe and the approach taken to the War in Ukraine. The Council of Europe was founded in 1949 to protect and uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. Frequently confused with the European Union, the Council of Europe's institutions play a significant role in safeguarding European human rights. These institutions have had a "coming of age" moment with the war in Ukraine and the exclusion of the Russian Federation on 16 March 2022. This webinar discusses Russia's exclusion and what it means for the future of human rights in Europe.
