Abstract
This presentation examines the critical balance between preserving African culinary heritage and the global imperative for sustainability through the adoption of modern, low-emission cooking technologies. African cooking traditions, with their rich cultural significance and diversity, stand at a crossroads, challenged by the need to reduce emissions, and promote gender equality without compromising their integrity. The study identifies key barriers and opportunities in integrating modern appliances into traditional cooking practices. It discusses several case studies where innovative cooking solutions, such as solar-powered stoves and energy-efficient cookware, have been successfully implemented in various African communities, demonstrating their potential to sustain cultural heritage while contributing to environmental sustainability. Additionally, it explores ethical considerations around the supply chains of these technologies. The discussion extends to strategies for fostering acceptance of these technologies, emphasizing the importance of community engagement, education, and policy frameworks that prioritize both environmental and cultural preservation. This paper aims to contribute to a nuanced understanding of how innovative cooking technologies can be harmoniously blended with African culinary traditions, promoting a sustainable and just future.
