Abstract

Inner becomes Outer and Outer becomes Other was commissioned for a group exhibition of forty-one international artists, 'My Head Is On Fire But My Heart Is Full Of Love', 8 May - 9 June 2002, Charlottenborg Udstillgsbygning, Copenhagen. The curators described the exhibition as a discussion of the concept of psychedelic minimalism, a paradoxical idea developed in part from the early experiments of Robert Smithson. Inner becomes Outer and Outer becomes Other uses the silhouette of a face and a chequerboard as motifs within a series of sculptural installations. The motifs are generic, allowing them to function as signs that signify themselves. Our commission repeated the component parts of the work as two, near identical installations in two, near identical rooms within the symmetrical layout of Charlottenborg. A further configuration of the work was exhibited at Kunstverein Braunschweig, Germany (2002). Each time the work is re-presented the elements are re-configured so as to articulate the relationship to the new space and context in which they are positioned.
