Abstract

In his memoirs Richard Demarco has often stressed the importance of his Italian upbringing. His maternal grandmother being from Barga in Tuscany, his grandfather from Picinisco near Frosinone, by virtue of his origins he is the embodiment of the quintessential Italo-Scot. In his personal recollections we hear of the hardships endured and the challenges faced by the Italo-Scottish community, but also of the value of their heritage. The cherished memory of the taste of his mother's minestrone acts for him like a Proustian madeleine. The young Demarco's first direct contact with Italy only happened in 1950, however, when he accompanied his father on a trip to Rome. Experiencing that journey through his descriptions, one feels how deeply impressed he was by the art, the religion and the culture of the Eternal City. Over the years, Italy has been a constant presence in his life and practice alike, influencing and inspiring in turn the lives of all those who have encountered his endeavours in the art world.
