Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyze the performance of Spanish co-operation from the perspective of Orem self-care theory, working from the hypothesis that international co-operation programmes function as total compensation systems. This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study, in which a qualitative analysis of international co-operation programmes was carried out in three African countries with active strategic plans between 2005-2008: Mozambique, Angola and Namibia. The variables were financing and management; the scope of the action; and the resources used. All three countries were found to have shared management of the co-operation program. In Mozambique, this is split between training activities (72%), management support (38%) and direct healthcare (27%), with a focus on combatting infectious and tropical diseases (50%). In Angola, this is split between training activities (37%), management support (37%) and direct healthcare (75%); this is focused on both basic health services (25%), and combatting infectious and tropical diseases (50%), and improving maternal and child health (25%). Finally, in Namibia the focus is entirely on direct healthcare (100%), through a combination of direct assistance and management support. The study concludes that the international health co-operation programmes developed by Spain have proven to function as partial compensation systems. The full text of this article is in Spanish.
