Dr Aakash Welgamage Don
| Biography | Dr Aakash Welgamage Don is a lecturer in Biological Sciences at the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences at RGU. Aakash received his PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from RGU in 2012. During this period, his research focused on the biodegradation of cyanobacterial toxins, specifically microcystin and nodularin, using environmental bacteria to purify water. After completing his PhD, Dr Welgamage worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at RGU from 2012 to 2017. During this period, he contributed to an EPSRC-funded research project that examined Photocatalytic bioethanol production. This project aimed to transform waste cellulose biomass into fermentable sugars (bioethanol) and explore the potential for generating high-value by-products from waste biomass. In addition to his work at RGU, Dr Welgamage Don held a Lectureship at Northeast Scotland College for four years, from 2017 to 2021, before returning to RGU in a similar capacity. Dr Welgamage is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of multiple professional organisations, including the Royal Society of Biology, the Microbiology Society, and Applied Microbiology International (AMI). He is also a qualified Scottish Vocational Qualification Assessor and a peer reviewer for various academic journals. |
