Research Interests David is a member of the Business & Enterprise theme research group within the Institute for Management Governance and Society (IMAGES) Research Institute. His main research interests are in employment, education, training and skills an also in local, national and international labour market policy, with particular focus on:
- Workforce development
- Skills utilisation and development
- Employment forecasts
- Barriers to learning and lifelong learning.

David has developed considerable expertise in the area of quantitative and qualitative survey data collection and evaluation and his work focuses on taking new and advanced research practice and results into the community. The work of the Centre in the development of the Workforce Skills for Business Growth Toolkit created a product which helped 30 businesses in Northeast Scotland tackle the key issues of workforce development and skills shortages.
Teaching and Learning David Gibbons-Wood is a lecturer in economics and teaches a variety of courses including, Labour Market Economics, Business Economics, Economic Environment and International Economics. He continually redevelops teaching materials to reflect theoretical developments and policy and legislation which affects labour economics and other economics courses.

David is also Director of the Centre for International Labour Market Studies and endeavours to incorporate empirical evidence generated by the Centre into his teaching. He has also delivered economics and labour market courses to corporate clients.
