Dr Nick Adams
Biography | Dr Nick Adams is a Chartered Psychologist; a member of the British Psychological Society, and a Science Council Registered Scientist. Dr Adams’ academic interests are interdisciplinary and draw from applied psychology and sociology. His research focus is most centralised upon ethnographically examining the influences of societal gender constructs upon human behaviour; with particular interest in men and masculinities, health behaviours, mental health, and risk-taking practices in a variety of contexts. His work on identity and masculinities is informed by post-structuralist intersectional feminist theories; exploring pathways towards positive human growth, and understanding development of socially inclusive and beneficial forms of masculinities in complex contexts, often where there exists historic or longitudinal socially-constructed expectations of ‘hypermasculinity’ and linked identities and behaviours. Within the above arena, Dr Adams also conducts research exploring the cultures of industrial workplaces, and examines linkages between identity, expectations and safety/risk behaviours. He also has strong research interests in mental health at work, and men's mental health and support-seeking practices as they link with masculinities, identity and positive growth. Presently, he is co-leading (as joint-PI) a structured evaluation of a novel wellbeing initiative focussing on green-space, learning, and nature exposure. Prior to this, he was part of an interdisciplinary research team exploring the experiences and effects of Long Covid illness in NHS Scotland workers (The LoCH Study). He has also been a team-member of several completed past research projects, including a research study examining the impacts and experience of caring for a loved one at home during end-of-life, and a novel research study within the School of Nursing and Midwifery, exploring the experiences of early entrants to professional practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to this, Dr Adams was involved in sociological research ethnographically examining collaboration behaviours within Aberdeen-based, specific sector energy organisations, and attitudes to renewables-focused energy. Research was conducted within the School of Applied Social Studies (SASS). Dr Adams’ past PhD (Completed at Aberdeen University, 2019) focussed on the multiple and complex notions of masculinities held by offshore oilmen working in the remote UK North Sea oilfields; how masculinities can shift and change towards socially and personally positive constructs, how past ‘hegemonic’ masculinities can be challenged in all-male spaces, and how different cultures of masculinities can emerge in specific spaces. ___ PhD and MRes Supervision ___ My interests with regards to PhD and MRes supervision include: Mental Health, Identity and Gender Identity, Men and Masculinities, Men and Masculinities and Feminist Theory, Workplace Safety and Risk Taking.
