Abstract

This exhibition features works that investigate the cultural perceptions of walls as barriers, and as symbols of both confinement and unification - marking a territory, taming nature, and separating and protecting people. This was the first solo exhibition by Dutch video art pioneer Madelon Hooykaas, curated by Laura Leuzzi and Iliyana Nedkova, produced by Horsecross Arts and facilitated by funding from Creative Scotland's Open Project Fund. The exhibition opening event also featured a live performance of "Virtual Walls | Real Walls", a curated screening of Hooykaas' latest films, and a post-screening audience discussion with the artist and the curators. This was the only UK showing of the exhibition, following its appearences in Venice, Amsterdam and Berlin.
