Defining leadership: lessons from a virtual international team.
Luck, Susan; Crawford, Izzy
Abstract
Students who took part in this intercultural communication activity had the opportunity to interact with students from another country. It was a chance to experience another culture, similarities and differences, collaborate on a shared project using different digital platforms, some of which they were familiar with, others they had never used before. This was an opportunity to push themselves out of their comfort-zone and try something new. The task involved leadership communication and employee engagement. This topic lends itself well to this method of activity as it is relevant to all disciplines and all types of organisation and all students were able to relate easily and talk comfortably on the subject. They were able also to use the learning from the activity to feed into their specific assignments back home. Perhaps, one of the biggest benefit of doing collaborative online international learning is that it enhances the employability prospects for the students who take part. They are being exposed to a global digital environment, collaborative team working and the chance to developed the highly valued transversal skills that employers look for now and are likely to value even more in the future.
