Implementing a large files policy for assessment submission.
Zarb, Mark; Lytwynenko, Jay
Abstract
All coursework submitted within the School of Computing goes through CampusMoodle. However, this is not always a practicable solution due to its 500MB file limit, and the growing complexity of files submitted for student work. Some modules in the School, particularly in BSc Computing and Creative Design, and BSc Digital Media, make use of large assets, videos and other files that frequently exceed this file limit. Historically, students used a variety of tools to aid their submission (such as Dropbox, Google Drive, YouTube, etc.), but these solutions were not fit for purpose. Due to the move to Office 365, the School wanted to explore a solution that leveraged the students' access to their institutional OneDrive accounts. Through the School of Computing Teaching Committee, staff members worked on a Large Files policy, with specific instructions for both staff and students, which will be presented as part of this talk. The Large Files Policy was heavily tested over the 2019/20 and 2020/21 academic years, and rolled out in full in September 2021. For the cohorts where this was deployed, there was a course-level rise in satisfaction with expectations about assessment. Whilst this was not the only change made to assessment structure, it is posited that the clear guidance and setting of expectations introduced with the Large Files Policy has contributed to this increase. The talk will reflectively look back at this rollout, indicating both student and staff experience, and propose lessons learned, as well as suggesting amendments for future versions of this policy.
