Abstract

In this workshop, I will help colleagues to produce a plan for making their own teaching more inclusive by drawing on: my role as course leader, in which I have helped to diversify the curriculum experience since 2009; my role as RGU race equality champion; and my students' lived-experiences. My teaching philosophy centres around connecting to my learners at a human level and co-creating opportunities for success within an inclusive learning environment. Since 2018, I've systematically transformed each stage of the pre-applicant to alumni journey within my postgraduate course with a view to making it more inclusive. I have aligned my approach with RGU strategy and values, best practices across the higher education sector, and - most importantly - the student voice. Achieving this transformation has involved bringing together a wide range of colleagues from across RGU: widening access, admissions, recruitment, marketing, immigration, international office, teaching teams and international stakeholders. I will share the impact of: flexible study models for students with caring responsibilities; student-centred timetabling; inclusive marketing and recruitment for diverse applicants; widening access by breaking down barriers to enrolment; fostering a sense of RGU community for international, on-campus students; a bespoke study support series for resilient learners; and an alumni mentoring scheme.
