Abstract

This article uses a literature review to reflect on the theme of international cooperation in social work. The research was undertaken by searching for two phrases - "international cooperation in research and social work" and "international cooperation in research in social work" - in both English and Portuguese. The study used Scopus, Periódicos Capes and Google Scholar. 16 unique articles were selected. The study explored the variables of country of origin, journal and textual focus. Additionally, the study examined the triennial (2004, 2007, 2010, 2013) and quadrennial (2017, 2021) evaluation reports on Capes. the study found that most of the selected articles were in English and with authors from central countries (USA, Germany and the UK accounted for 39%). Brazil accounted for 10%. This article emphasises that internationalisation is a process that forms part of social work; however, asymmetrical relations between the central and peripheral countries impact this process in ways ranging from the delimitation of research focus to the relationships within research teams. This makes it necessary to further the debate on this subject within Brazil.
