Abstract

The relationship between technology and graphic communication is fundamental, profoundly influencing our interpretation of architecture and design, particularly within the cultural heritage sector. This synergy consistently drives innovation, shaping the evolution of tools, methods, and techniques for recording historical sites and structures. Advanced documentation technologies, including terrestrial laser scanning, digital photogrammetry, and UAV data capture, offer new capabilities for understanding and interpreting cultural heritage spaces and places. The outcomes of these advanced systems and methodologies can offer new insight and opportunities to generate new knowledge, even within structures that have endured for centuries. This paper explores the dynamic relationship between technology and graphic communication, highlighting their transformative impact on our understanding of built cultural heritage with the potential of generating new knowledge. To illustrate these concepts, the experiences from three project case studies are described, including the Cologne Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage Site in Germany, St. Peter's Seminary in Cardross, Scotland, and the Aachen Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage Site in Germany. These examples highlight the broader implications of technology and techniques in the cultural heritage sector.
