Status Complete Part Time No Years 2003 - 2007 Project Title Putative Bacteroides fragilis virulence determinants; analysis and comparison Project Description Bacteroides fragilis is a strict anaerobe, and obligate symbiont of the gastrointestinal tract. It is also an opportunistic pathogen, and the most common anaerobe isolated from clinical infection, causing internal abscesses, bacteraemia, and gynaecological infections, often as a result of abdominal surgery or trauma.
AIM – To investigate putative virulence factors, and determine ability to survive in infection models, with overall aim to identify factors which make this bacterium more pathogenic than other gut commensals.Awarding Institution Queen's University, Belfast
