Professor Nadimul Faisal

Biography Prof Nadimul Faisal (PhD, FHEA, CEng MIMechE, MIMMM) is currently a Professor of Surface Engineering & Micromechanics in the School of Engineering (Mechanical) at Robert Gordon University (RGU), Aberdeen, UK. He joined RGU in 2013 as Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering.

He previously worked as Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Alfaisal University, a Teaching Fellow at University of Strathclyde, and a Research Assistant at Heriot-Watt University. He has worked as Junior Research Fellow at Surface Engineering Division, International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad, India.

Experience includes leading & co-leading research funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC), Centre of Excellence for Sensor and Imaging Systems (CENSIS), The Data Lab, The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), Innovate UK, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), and Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL).

He has delivered number of commercial projects funded by over 20 companies.

He is a Member of IMechE and CEng, and IMMM, Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Member of RSE’s Young Academy of Scotland (MYAS), Member of Council of The Mining Institute of Scotland (MIS), Member of Council of The Scottish Association of Metals (SAM), and Member of EPSRC Peer Review College.
Research Interests • Thermal spray coatings (micromechanics, process monitoring)
• Acoustic emission sensor based instrumented mechanical testing
• Materials and manufacturing of electrodes (electrolysers, fuel cells)
• Metasurface manufacturing to reduce radar cross-section
• Neutron residual strain measurement of coatings, rocks & alloys (Engin-X/STFC)
• Corrosion monitoring (electrochemical & acoustic emission)
• Fracture mechanics of adhesively bonded joints
• Nanomechanical (nanoindentation, nano-impact/fatigue, nano-scratch) testing
• Advanced materials characterisation (surface engineering, graphene-based nano-composite & electrode, shape memory alloys, helical auxetic yarns, adhesive bonds)
• Analytical/Computational modelling (and some data analytics)
