Dr Ali Rohan
Biography | Dr. Ali Rohan is a Research Fellow at the National Subsea Centre (NSC), School of Computing, Engineering, and Technology, Robert Gordon University, specialising in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Computer Vision. His research focuses on developing intelligent robotic platforms that operate autonomously across complex and unstructured environments—from aerial drones and surface robotics to underwater systems. By leveraging advanced perception, sensor fusion, and learning algorithms, his work enables robotic systems to perceive, adapt, and act intelligently in challenging real-world conditions. Dr. Rohan’s current research contributes to the advancement of autonomous technologies that support net-zero transitions, particularly in offshore and hard-to-access environments. He specialises in AI-driven perception, sensor fusion, and learning-based control, with broader expertise in signal and image processing, machine learning, and intelligent automation. He holds a PhD in Electrical, Electronics, and Control Engineering from Kunsan National University, South Korea, where he specialised in the application of AI and computer vision to autonomous aerial systems. His doctoral research focused on creating drone platforms with integrated visual and auditory perception for tasks such as surveillance, search, and rescue. Prior to joining RGU, he worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham, contributing to Net-Zero initiatives in agriculture through the development of AI-based behaviour recognition and disease detection models in livestock. He also served as an Assistant Professor at Dongguk University, South Korea, where he led projects in industrial AI, manufacturing digitisation, and robotic assistance in surgical procedures. |
