Biography Professor Maria Sanchez is Associate Dean for Research at Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment. She is an Architect and a chartered member of the RIBA and RIAS. Maria is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Her research focuses on the intersection between architecture, spatial practice, and performance design. Her interdisciplinary academic work explores the embodied and cultural dimensions of space, with particular focus on placemaking, performativity, and civic engagement.

Maria brings a distinctive interdisciplinary perspective to architectural education and research, grounded in her professional background in performance design and her international profile as a creative practitioner. Maria’s research-led practice has been presented internationally, including at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), the Prague Quadrennial of Scenography, and the Venice Biennales of Architecture and Dance.

Her scholarly publications include Dynamic Cartography: Body, Architecture and Performative Space (Routledge, 2020) and Placeness and the Performative Production of Space (Bloomsbury, 2024), both contributing to emerging conversations around spatial practices, representation, and the lived experience of architecture. Maria’s work is characterised by a commitment to collaborative and cross-disciplinary approaches that challenge traditional architectural narratives with a focus on interdisciplinary practice-based methodologies.
