Project Title International Trade Law and Sustainability: Balancing Trade Liberalisation and Environmental Protection
Project Description
This dissertation delves into the complex relationship between international trade law and
sustainability, with a specific focus on the delicate balance between trade liberalisation and
environmental protection. The expansion of global trade has raised concerns about its impact
on environmental degradation, making it more important than ever to examine the theoretical
perspectives that frame the trade-environment debate. Through a critical analysis of major
international trade agreements such as WTO and NAFTA (now USMCA), and environmental
agreements such as UNFCCC and CBD, this study identifies limitations of the current WTO
framework in promoting environmental protection. The study also explores challenges and
opportunities for better aligning trade and environment, with an analysis of the role played by
sustainability impact assessments. Finally, the study concludes with policy recommendations for
reforming trade law and agreements to better incorporate environmental considerations.
