Reusing Subsea Natural Gas Pipeline Infrastructure for Bulk Hydrogen Transportation

People Involved

Professor Edward Gobina

Project Description

The goal of the project is to study the permeability, diffusivity, and solubility of hydrogen in six types of austenitic Steel by a gaseous permeation technique in the temperature range 50–430°C. The effect of the cold-working, heat treatment conditions and the alloy composition of the materials on hydrogen permeation will be investigated. The results will be used to develop a mathematical transport model describing the permeability and diffusivity of hydrogen in various alloys as a function of temperature, thickness and trans membrane pressure to be used in predicting cracking and ebritlement.
