Understanding barriers to care through the perspectives of new mothers who experienced delayed antenatal care in rural Georgia and rural Scotland
Project Description
Delayed access to antenatal care or late booking has been associated with increased maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Studies have consistently indicated antenatal care plays a vital role in the prevention of preterm births. Preliminary findings from a recent study we've just conducted have shown a huge disparity in timely access to antenatal care between rural Scotland and rural Georgia. Therefore, this qualitative study aims to understand why some women are late to access antenatal care. Other objectives include: 1) understanding the barriers and facilitators to access in antenatal care in rural Georgia and rural Scotland and 2) exploring the role of different healthcare systems in addressing barriers to early antenatal care. The study proposed to conduct semi structured interviews of women who presented after 12 weeks gestation for their first hospital booking appointment in community and maternity hospital settings.
