Abstract

In 2018, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) published standards for pre-registration nursing programmes (NMC, 2018), shaped by its 'Future Nurse' standards for nurse proficiency. Prior to implementation, the Mental Health Nurse Academics UK (MHNAUK, 2016) position statement warned that while mental health nurses may require more physical health skills, generic programmes could harm provision of mental health content. Concerns were raised and these fears have now been realised. Instead of feeling pride in being a mental health nursing lecturer, the author now feels embarrassed and feels that while speaking to prospective mental health nursing students the truth that their course will not contain nearly enough mental health nursing content is being hidden from them.
