Giving children a voice: embedding children's rights in higher education teaching programmes.
Allan, Elaine
Abstract
Patient and public involvement is a requirement in planning and designing nursing and midwifery education (Nursing and Midwifery Council 2018). A novel example of involving children and young people (C&YP) is offerred. Child-focused education programmes should include the voices of C&YP to progress the Rights of Children (ROC) (The Scottish Government 2018, 2021; United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989). This initiative has the potential to increase awareness of the ROC, improve practice and contribute to progressing the Human Rights of Children in the Scottish Government's action plan, so that upholding the ROC becomes normalised. The strengths of the initiative have been the co-design of child rights-based teaching materials, enriched student and partner experience, and the sharing of the process of the initiative UK-wide - thereby raising the profile of the ROC and RGU. Limitations related to challenges of including children with a learning disability within the cohort. Children and young people have clear opinions and views when consulted in an inclusive, age-appropriate way through rights-based participation.
