Abstract
In 2021, a novel teaching framework - The Global Citizenship Framework (GCF) - was designed to embed EDI and sustainability in curricula, in response to student lived-experience feedback and QAA Scotland calls to de-colonise curricula. The framework facilitates a holistic approach to EDI through inclusive curricula design, delivery and bespoke support systems. GCF encompasses 3 Cs: Connect (connecting learners and community); Create (co-creating diverse curricula); and Celebrate (celebrating individual and global identity). The Global Citizenship Framework aligns with the refreshed 2022 RGU strategy for developing students as global citizens. The rationale behind this framework is to help module leaders embed EDI from an academic and pastoral angle, to foster a sense of belonging in students as we emerge from the pandemic. Through a collaboration with the RGU Race Equality champion and module leaders, innovative EDI seminars exploring personal and professional identity, protected characteristics, UN Sustainability Development Goals and meeting the needs of diverse patients have been delivered. The primary aim was to increase awareness of global health and inequalities. The second aim was to nurture a sense of belonging to RGU and their future profession. Student feedback shows an overwhelmingly positive impact, both in terms of student belonging and the beginnings of emerging as future global citizens.
