Land of woke and glory? The British war on wokeness. [Conference Event]
Smith, David
Authors
Abstract
Wokeness is discussed in the media on a daily basis, and has been called "one of the biggest threats to modern civilisation" by the then world's richest man. Yet its specific meaning is extremely vague. The term originated among black American communities in the early twentieth century, referring to an awareness of different socio-political pressures. However, it's since been applied to various topics, from academic freedom and environmental activism to the race of Dwarves in Rings of Power and what songs get played at the Proms. Most often, it's used to dismiss rather than argue for causes.
