Project Title Feasibility and acceptability of a multi-component intervention (PDConnect) to support physical activity in people living with Parkinson's: a mixed methods study.
Project Description The ultimate aim is to investigate the long-term effectiveness of PDConnect by way of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) and the impact PDConnect has on participation in physical activity. PDConnect is a model of care which combines specialist Physiotherapy, community based exercise supported by embedded behavioural change strategies. However, to embark on such a trial would currently be premature, due to a number of unknown factors remaining. Therefore, in keeping with guidance for the development of complex interventions the proposed study will test the feasibility and acceptability of the exercise programme and study procedures. This important first step will generate knowledge on a number of aspects: acceptability, perceptions, adherence and attitudes. For example: whether it is possible to recruit to a trial bridging the NHS and the third sector, and to explore acceptability of receiving care in a non-healthcare environment, whether it is possible to train fitness instructors and gauge their perceptions, attitudes and opinions of training and any problems they encountered with this). The outcome of the proposed study will be a protocol for a robust and adequately powered randomised controlled trial to fully evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of PDConnect.
