Exercise Prescription for Tendinopathy: A Qualitative Exploratory Study

People Involved

Project Description

Following on from the findings of our NIHR-funded large evidence synthesis project on Exercise for Tendinopathy, this study will address one of the research recommendations by exploring the prescription of resistance exercise for common tendinopathies by physiotherapists and also barriers to adhering to resistance exercise from the perspectives of people receiving physiotherapy for tendinopathy.

We will recruit a purposive sample of NHS Grampian outpatient physiotherapists (supplemented with recruitment from private practitioners and/or national online networks if required) and a purposive sample of people attending or recently discharged from physiotherapy who are/were managed using resistance exercise.
The study will examine prescription, particularly dosage parameters, from the perspective of physiotherapists and people undertaking resistance exercise as therapy for tendinopathy, to explore reasons why resistance exercise may be prescribed/performed at sub-optimal dosage.

The findings will contribute to the growing evidence-base in the field of exercise therapy for tendinopathy and will support the development of future exercise interventions with enhanced adherence potential.
