Abstract
Liquid feedstock containing sub-micron to nano-sized particles is used in suspension thermal spray to produce nanostructured ceramic coatings with improved density, strength and durability over conventional powder based thermal sprayed coatings. It has already been demonstrated that suspension sprayed alumina provides two orders of magnitude wear protection compared to traditional high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) or atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) coatings, and suspension HVOF sprayed Yttria stabilised zirconia (YSZ) coating has a better strain tolerance than APS coatings. The aim of this proposal is to investigate the residual strain behaviour of suspension high velocity oxy-fuel (SHVOF) thermal sprayed alumina and yttria stablised zirconia coatings deposited onto a CoNiCrAlY bond coat on a Ni-based superalloy (263) substrate.
