The use of social media in the construction and maintenance of a “women’s co-operative constellation” in Scotland

People Involved

Project Description

The aim of the project is to investigate the use of social media in the construction and maintenance of a “women’s co-operative constellation” – including Scottish politicians, policy experts, academics, journalists and feminist campaigners – around the issue of current Scottish government proposed reforms to the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) of 2004. The project investigates the use of social media to hold together a disparate group of women who campaign for more consideration of the impacts on women’s rights of changes to the GRA. Social media is used by these women to communicate information and strategy, build support and respond swiftly to statements by government bodies, campaigners for GRA reform and critics. It also offers a place for anonymous action and support – on a subject where women often find themselves publicly attacked and reviled.
