Socio-environmental sustainability of food behaviours as a result of Covid-19

People Involved

Project Description

Examine changes in people’s food related behaviours in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the long-term implications of these for bringing about more socially just and environmentally sustainable food systems.

The initial outbreak of the pandemic, and accompanying lockdown measures forced widespread changes in food related behaviours across all social groups. The pandemic, and the unprecedented financial government support to mitigate it, thus created a totally unique set of circumstances in which social change occurred. This project will look at the nature and extent of food related behaviours across different social groups and especially those experiencing food poverty and difficulties in accessing affordable, healthy food in sufficient quantities to meet their needs. It will also look at other changes that were said to have happened, from an increase in local purchasing, to panic buying and stockpiling, and more people growing their own food. It will further examine the long-term implications of people’s food-related behaviour changes for transitioning food systems to be more socially just and environmentally sustainable, or not. Theoretically, it will examine the lessons that can be learnt for bringing about a more equitable and just society through widespread political interventions in response to sudden and unanticipated external threats to economic and social wellbeing.
