Abstract

"Mirrored Futures" is a continuation and expansion of a visual ethnographic film titled "Mirrored Transitions". Produced from archive and found footage, the film was presented at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews. The continuation will explore themes of industrial transition and the social impact of this transition in the specific context of Aberdeen. The self-proclaimed "Energy Capital of Europe" is on the cusp of a significant decline in wealth relating to oil and gas. As such, it is the epicentre of a potential post-oil culture in Scotland. Utilising found footage, this film will explore these themes in a poetic visual ethnography. In this presentation I discuss the project in its current state, with a specific focus on the methodologies deployed, and the intersection between academic research and artistic practice.
