The global imperative to achieve decarbonisation and net-zero targets underscores the critical need for a skilled workforce capable of driving the energy transition forward. While significant efforts have been made to establish infrastructures conducive to net-zero objectives, there remains a fundamental necessity to prepare a proficient workforce. STEM Learning UK plays a pivotal role in this regard, serving as a platform for STEM ambassadors to create initiatives or offers aimed at inspiring STEM learners and equipping them for the complexities of the energy transition era.
This paper presents an examination of the impact of two initiatives related to the hydrogen economy and lifecycle analysis, which have been delivered in schools across the UK. It explores the strategies employed to engage STEM learners effectively, identifies key gaps and barriers in the training delivery process, and emphasizes the importance of future training endeavours. Through shedding light on the experiences and insights gained through these initiatives, this study contributes to the ongoing discourse on empowering the next generation of STEM professionals to drive decarbonisation efforts and navigate the challenges of the energy transition.
